While I pruned my autumn-fruiting raspberries to the ground some time ago, I left one cane, on the off chance, because it still had flowers on it. Today, I was somewhat surprised to see the tiny, unremarkable flowers had fruited despite the frosts we’ve had.

It’s Matariki and Winter Solstice – today is the shortest day – and another branch nearby is flowering and beginning to ripen. The raspberry plants maybe show what Matariki is about: the past, the present and the future. Connecting with nature by being in the garden reminds me that there are forces far beyond my gardening efforts.
